French as a Second Language

With more than 300 million speakers on 5 continents, French is the second language that we learn most often after English. The study of French not only allows you to discover a rich cultural universe, especially in the fields of arts, science and architecture, but is also an asset for anyone considering an international career.

Regular Courses

Program: For-credit or not-for-credit

École de langues (ELUL) offers 15-week for-credit and not-for-credit programs during the following semester:

Winter 2024

Semester dates: January 15 to April 26, 2024

Registration deadline (new students): before December 1st, 2024
Registration (Université Laval students): from November 20, 2023, to January 12, 2024

Courses are separated into 5 levels, from beginner to B2. You can register as a full-time (4 to 5 courses) or part-time student (1 to 3 courses).

Admission requirements (for all applicants)

To be eligible for our French as a Foreign Language program, you must:

  • Have a language other than French as your first language
  • Be at least 18 years of age at the beginning of the program
  • Take the online placement test. The placement test will be sent to you after your registration.

École de langues does not accept audit students.

Workshops and tutoring

Each semester, workshops and tutoring in French are offered to the program students. These are perfect occasions to improve your French. A service appreciated by students who want to progress quickly.

Informations and registration

For-credit program: Procedures to complete at registration

With the for-credit courses, you obtain university credits. Your grades will be available online and you will be able to request an official transcript from the Université Laval Registrar’s office.

The student may register for a full-time program (4 to 5 courses) or a part-time program (1 to 3 courses). One course amounts to weekly three hour-classes, the schedule will vary depending on your level and the chosen courses. One course will give the student 3 undergraduate credits, to be considered a full-time student you need to take a minimum of 12 credits (4 courses) per semester.

Documents (for all applicants)

The following documents must be sent in a single email to fls@elul.ulaval.ca before December 1st:

  • application form (PDF, 2.5 Mo)
  • A legible photocopy of your birth certificate1 2

1If your birth certificate is in a language other than French, English orSpanish, please include an official translation in French or in English. By official translation, we mean a translation bearing the official seal of the translation provider or a photocopy certified by a duly authorized person to be a true copy of the original. The original documents must be sent by email. We do not accept documents transmitted by fax.

If you are a permanent resident or a Canadian citizen born outside of Canada, you do not need to send us a birth certificate (check the following section).

Some documents may require a signature. They can be signed electronically (secure PDF digital signature) or by hand. If you choose a handwritten signature, you must print the document, sign it, and scan it in PDF format.

Permanent residents and Canadian citizens born outside of Canada

Proof of citizenship or permanent residency. The only documents accepted are:

  • A legible copy of your IMM 1000, IMM 5292, IMM 5688 or IMM 5617 (Record of Landing) form
  • A photocopy (front and back) of your permanent residence card OR Canadian citizenship card/certificate

International students (non-Canadian citizens or non-permanent residents of Canada)

These conditions do not apply to the online courses.
  • Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) and obligatory Study Permit
  • The amount required to cover health and hospital insurance
  • The CAQ (Certificat d'acceptation du Québec) and study permit are only required for international students who apply for admission to a certificate programme or wish to register for more than one semester.
  • All international students who register at Université Laval must subscribe to the University’s health and hospitalization insurance plan. The cost of the insurance is added to tuition fees. Please note that students age 65 and over are not eligible for the group plan and must obtain their own insurance for the length of their stay in Québec. Proof of this coverage must be provided.

Payment and cancellation

Application fee

A non-refundable application fee of $97 needs to be paid when you submit your application. You can pay online with a credit card or by sending a cheque payable to Université Laval in Canadian dollars and cashable at a North American financial institution.

Tuition fee for all courses taken will be billed to the student in their portal by the Financial Services. For more information about the tuition fee payment terms, please consult the Financial Services website.

Withdrawals and cancellations

Notification of withdrawal or cancellation must be submitted in writing as soon as possible to École de Langues:

  • by email at fls@elul.ulaval.ca
  • by filling out the form available at room 2301 in the Charles-De Koninck building.

Withdrawals and cancellations take effect on the date École de langues receives the official request.

Not-for-credit program: Procedures to complete at registration

With the not-for-credit courses you will receive a certificate of completion for the continuing education units (CEUs) you earn. This certificate will indicate your level of competence, the length of your courses, and the grades you obtained on a scale from A to E.
