With more than 300 million speakers on 5 continents, French is the second language that we learn most often after English. The study of French not only allows you to discover a rich cultural universe, especially in the fields of arts, science and architecture, but is also an asset for anyone considering an international career.

L'École de langues de l'Université Laval carries a wide expertise in teaching and is renowned for its 85-year experience in French as a Second / Foreign language intensive teaching.

Our intensive program is taking place in the morning from Monday to Friday up to 18 hours a week.  The program includes sociocultural activities allowing reinforcement and practice as well as an initiation to Quebec’s culture. These activites are taking place outside of class hours.

We have a team of qualified, specialized and experienced teachers, who focus on the student’s needs and goals.

Admission

To be eligible for our French as a Foreign Language programs, you must:

  • Have a language other than French as your first language
  • Be at least 18 years of age at the beginning of the program
  • Take the online placement test

École de langues does not accept audit student

How to create an UL password (PIN) (PDF)
With you IDUL and your UL password (PIN) you have access to MonPortail.ulaval.ca et and you can generate your student card.

Policies on absences and schedule conflicts related to exams 

Students who cannot be present for their mid-semester exam or their final exam must submit a postponement request to the French as a second language academic advisor as soon as they are aware of their inability to be present at their exam.

IDUL and NIP identification

 How can you get it?
 
1. First, you have to know your user ID (IDUL and password) which will allow you to have access to monPortail. You receive your IDUL by email.
 
2.To create your password, click here. Fill in the required fields marked with an asterisk (Prénom = first name, Nom de famille = last name) and answer the 3 questions listed (French only). Il you don’t understand the questions, just pick any 3 question and choose an easy answer, a word you will remember.
 
Write your new password twice and an email address you can currently use and then click on Soumettre la demande d’activation d’un nouveau mot de passe (NIP). If you experience any difficulties creating your password, go to the Direction des technologies de l’information Website and click on your faculty for assistance.
 
3. When it is done, you go to https://monportail.ulaval.ca/. To sign in enter your IDUL and password.

For-Credit course (90h)

With the for-credit courses, you obtain 6 university credits. Your grades will be available online and you will be able to request an official transcript from the Université Laval Registrar’s office.

Documents (for all applicants)

The following documents must be sent in a single email to fls@elul.ulaval.ca before April 1st, 2024 (part 1) or May 1st, 2024 (part 2):

  • application form (PDF, 2.5 Mo)
  • A legible photocopy of your birth certificate1 2

1If your birth certificate is in a language other than French, English orSpanish, please include an official translation in French or in English. By official translation, we mean a translation bearing the official seal of the translation provider or a photocopy certified by a duly authorized person to be a true copy of the original. The original documents must be sent by email. We do not accept documents transmitted by fax.

If you are a permanent resident or a Canadian citizen born outside of Canada, you do not need to send us a birth certificate (check the following section).

Some documents may require a signature. They can be signed electronically (secure PDF digital signature) or by hand. If you choose a handwritten signature, you must print the document, sign it, and scan it in PDF format.

Permanent residents and Canadian citizens born outside of Canada

Proof of citizenship or permanent residency. The only documents accepted are: 

  • A legible copy of your IMM 1000, IMM 5292, IMM 5688, or IMM 5617(Record of Landing) form
  • A photocopy (front and back) of your permanent residence card OR Canadian citizenship card/certificate

1 Special pedagogical fees apply to on campus courses, for a maximum of 6 credits. Visiting students must also pay these fees.

Foreign students taking FLS courses who are registered in a BA, MA or PhD program at l'Université Laval pay the same tuition fees as Quebecois students do for their courses.

A non-refundable application fee of $97 needs to be paid when you submit your application. You can pay online with a credit card or by sending a cheque payable to Université Laval in Canadian dollars and cashable at a North American financial institution.

Tuition, student service fees, and insurance

Important notice: once admitted you will need to access monPortail. Please see the instructions (PDF, 67 Ko) (available in French only.) 

Tuition fee for all courses taken will be billed to the student in their portal by the Financial Services. For more information about the tuition fee payment terms, please consult the Financial Services website.

Important date

The payment deadline will be indicated on your invoice. Important notice for students registered for the 2nd summer session: Check your messages regularly in monPortail, since you will only have 2 weeks to pay your invoice once it is available in Capsule.

Online payment

To pay your tuition fees on the website of your financial institutions, please follow these steps:

  1. Select the “Bill payment” menu
  2. Search for and select “Université Laval” from the supplier list
  3. Select ”Tuition fees or student fees”
  4. The financial institution will ask for a reference or account number. Write the 10-digit number shown on your invoice.  
  5. Enter the amount to be paid.
  6. Print the transaction record as a proof of your payment.

Please allow three to five business days for your payment to be processed.

With the not-for-credit courses you will receive a certificate of completion for the continuing education units (CEUs) you earn. This certificate will indicate your level of competence, the length of your courses, and the grades you obtained on a scale from A to E.

Housing

Program students can stay in a university dormitory. 

For the students registered to our intensive program, the cost for 35 nights will be of $680,05 (including​ bedding and refrigerator).
